MotoGP Champion Crowned
September 23rd, 2007 by gofaster
Casey Stoner(#27) and Bridgestone earned their first MotoGP World Championship today in Japan. Stoner became the second youngest rider in the 59 year history of the sport to win the premier class title at age 21 years, 342days old. This would make the second season for Stoner who became a MotoGP rider in 2006 and for Bridgestone who entered the class in 2002. Bridgestone was ecstatic to have a 1-2-3 finish in their home town track, as well as clenching the season title for the first time. Marlboro Ducati was cheering as well as Stoner finished the race in 6th place. It was all he needed though with the Fiat Yamaha Team, in particular Valentino Rossi (#46), suffering from tyre problems. Rossi came in 13th after having to come into the pits 2x during the race.
Loris Capirossi(#65) followed by Team Green’s Randy De Puniet(#14) and Honda’s Toni Elias(#24) would all take the podium. Elias managed this despite still dealing with his injury from Assen. American’s Nicky Hayden(#1 and now former World Champion) and John Hopkins(#21) came in 9th and 10th with Colin Edwards(#5) taking 14th.
The weather was a big influence today, with the 24 lap(115.224 Km) race starting on wet tyres and many riders opting at different points to switch to slicks.
