Spies…..you the man

October 26th, 2009 by gofaster

As many of you I am sure are aware, Ben Spies in his rookie year took the World Superbike crown for 2009. I believe that is Yamaha’s first WSBK Championship. One of my favorite races this season was the last lap of Assen when Spies stole the win from Haga at the last possible moment. He will soon join the ranks of the worlds most elite when he takes on MotoGP with Tech 3 Yamaha. I personally look forward to the team of Texans and what I hope is a great battle for the Championship for Yamaha.

Qatar Pirelli Tests

December 7th, 2007 by gofaster

Bayliss rides to the top of the timesheet. For two and a half days Troy Corser rider with Yamaha Motor Italia looked like he would be the only man to leave Losail with a time under the 1’58 barrier, but after suffering his second crash he had to sit out the final part, and watch his great rival Troy Bayliss riding with Ducati Xerox secure the best lap time of 1’58.1.

Bayliss, riding the all-new 1098 F08 machine, put in a quick last lap after a busy test for both rider and team, overcoming some set-up issues on day one to finish strongly. Second quickest rider was Corser’s team-mate and 2007 vice-champion, Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia) who used a new swingarm design to secure a time of 1’58.4, only two tenths better than Corser’s pre-crash best.

World Superbike Winter Testing begins

November 27th, 2007 by gofaster

Hannspree Honda Althea started their pre-season tests at the Calafat circuit in Spain. Windy weather didn’t stop Roberto Rolfo, Gianluca Nannelli and Tommy Hill from completing several laps of the circuit, getting themselves used to the bikes and the team. Unfortunately Hill crashed and was taken to the local Tarragona hospital with a suspected broken right leg; the full extent of his injuries and his recovery time will be known tomorrow.

Gianluca Nannelli: “I am very happy because this first test has let me establish the professionalism of the new team and the abilities of the 2007 Honda CBR600RR. I turned in times averaging 1:29.0 but the team are convinced that tomorrow, if the weather stays good, I will be able to improve this time.”

Roberto Rolfo: “I am indeed happy with this first contact with my new team. We have worked a lot, always building, making continuous improvements. My best time as a 1:26.6 but tomorrow we will better this, without a doubt. The track is short but very technical so it’s a good test for the work we are doing.”

Salvatore Giorlandino: “The first day of testing has gone very well. There is a good feeling between the riders and technicians, and I see a focussed and enthusiastic team. We’re very sorry about Tommy’s accident and hope that the injuries he received aren’t too much of a setback. The crash happened in the first laps and we still don’t understand what caused it.”

Tomorrow the events at Qatar will begin, the 5.38 km Losail circuit hosts the first significant group test of the 2008 season, between November 28 and 30. Almost 2 months after the end of an exciting 2007 season, the 2008 season will begin at Qatar on Saturday 23 February, and this test will be a valuable early projection for all the competing teams and manufacturers. Expect new machines and rider line-ups for the 2008 season, with Qatar the first opportunity for most of the top teams to try out not just their new line-ups and machines against their main competitors, but the latest generation of Pirelli control tyres also.

The World Superbike Championship will embrace twin-cylinder machines of up to 1200cc from this point on. To ensure that no single format of machinery dominates any other, the new machines will run with air-intake restrictors and greater dry weight than the 1000cc fours, and by regulation the engines on the twins are now much closer to stock than any previous incarnation of Ducati race machinery.

Ducati Xerox riders Troy Bayliss and Michel Fabrizio will get their first chance to run their Ducati 1098F08 machinery against some of their competitors. Much is expected of the new machine, even in privateer form, but as always at these development tests, only one designated development team per manufacturer will be running. All three of Hannspree Ten Kate Honda’s 2008 riders will test at Qatar, but not all riders on all three days of the test.

The only SBK team with an unchanged rider line-up is the Yamaha Motor Italia squad of Noriyuki Haga and double World Champion Troy Corser. The Yamaha R1, which came within two points of the championship last year with Haga onboard, has proved potent, and even in its second model year is fully expected to be a force to be reckoned with again. The PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse team will not be at the Qatar tests, as they do not have their 2008 machinery ready for track action at present.

World Superbike 2008 Winter Testing

November 24th, 2007 by gofaster

It’s been almost two months after the final race of 2007, but the World Superbike Championship teams are back at it and hard at work preparing for the 2008 season. The Losail circuit in Qatar will be the venue for three days of testing for the official Pirelli development teams.

On track from the 28th to the 30th of November will be Troy Bayliss and Michel Frabrizio on the new Ducati 1200 twin, Noriyuki Haga and Troy Corser on the Yamaha R1, the new Suzuki pairing of Fonsi Nieto and Max Neukirchner, and last but not least the Honda SBK “rookies” Carlos Checa and Ryuichi Kiyonari. The only manufacturer not represented at Qatar will be Kawasaki, who will begin their testing schedule at Jerez in Spain.

2008 WSBK new signings

October 24th, 2007 by gofaster

For 2008 so far…

the Kawasaki PSG-1 team has signed Ayrton Badovini, winner of the final Superstock1000 race of the 2007 season at Magny Cours. The 21 year old Italian will either ride directly for the Kawasaki PSG-1 team alongside Regis Laconi, or possibly for the satellite Pedercini team. Team manager Pierguido Pagani is very happy with the signing after Badovini’s good performance during testing on the Kawasaki ZX10R at Mugello last week.

Team Sterligarda has signed Allessandri Olita for STK1000 in 2008 following the confirmation that Ruben Xaus will ride for Team Sterilgarda in World Superbikes, the team has now announced that Allessandro Polita will ride for them in Superstock1000. The 23 year old Italian will campaign a 1200 Ducati in the championship which he won in 2006 on Suzuki. For Polita it marks a return to Superstock1000 after a disappointing year in SBK following a fractured wrist which compromised his season. Allessandro Polita: “I have chosen Team Sterilgarda GMB because it’s a team that has demonstrated great professionalism while keeping a family spirit. The fact that they’re an important partner for Ducati further convinced me that it was a good choice. I can’t wait to get on the new 1200 and am sure that the team will do everything to go for the title that I won already in 2006.” Marco Borciani: “Allessandro is a great rider that I really rate, and I’m confident that we’ve created the right conditions in order for us to work together. With him in the squad we are going for the STK1000 championship and for this we will put in the best technical conditions to try and achieve this objective.”
